If you’re like me (and if you’re reading this blog), you’re probably interested in getting out in the world and enjoying new experiences. There’s nothing quite like travel for expanding your horizons, after all. And chances are, you like to find ways of doing it on a budget. If you’re going to be traveling the world you probably aren’t going to be able to splurge on accommodations and actual travel costs. That is unless you happen to be very well off, in which case, more power to you! At any rate, the idea of making some extra cash while you’re traveling is an appealing one. Even if you can make enough to pay for your meals while you’re abroad, you’re doing yourself a service.
You’ll note I’m not discussing ways to turn your travel experience itself into a money-making exercise. This site has covered how to start a blog before, and plenty of people do just that in order to share stories about their trips and possibly make a little money doing it.
Instead, I’m talking about a few ways you can try to make a bit of money in your spare time—perhaps on long flights or train rides. Here are a few of the things you might consider trying.
Try A Survey App
They’re definitely tedious, but survey apps can award you cash and gift cards in exchange for a little of your time. The general format is that you’ll be asked to take surveys and polls, and for every x number you complete, you’ll get a given amount of cash or credit to a store. I prefer Swagbucks as one of the more straightforward options, but there are several survey apps that can make you money. Again, I won’t pretend they’re not tedious—but you may as well be doing it if you have long bouts of downtime getting from one point to another.
Dabble In Mobile Gaming
I’ll start this one off with a clear disclaimer. You can absolutely lose money by doing this, so if you’re traveling on a tight budget, you’ll want to be careful. That said, it’s also a lot of fun. There are now a lot of mobile casinos that are accessible anywhere the laws allow for real money gaming, which means you can play slots and other games from anywhere.
I’d direct you toward blackjack wherever possible because it’s arguably the game where you can most easily tilt the odds in your own favor. Stick to betting small amounts and you may get some nice little payouts without risking too much of your own money.
Make A Pact
This might actually be my favorite option, even though payouts are pretty small. It’s all about personal discipline, mostly from a fitness perspective. The concept is simple.
You wager an amount on your own ability to eat healthily or exercise, and if you accomplish your goals, you’re paid a reward by others who failed to meet their own goals (and surrendered their wagers). Again, we’re talking about small amounts here, but the app’s motto is “commit to you,” and I like that all it takes here is personal effort and discipline.
Sell Your Photos
This is another great option for travelers, though it’s also easy to have a photo go unnoticed—so don’t expect big payouts right away. Nevertheless, apps like Foap allow you to upload photos, where people can buy them for $10. Particularly if you’re venturing out somewhere with beautiful scenery and you fancy yourself a decent photographer, it can be a nice way to make a little bit of money off of your experience.
